After you have read all four poems, you are to do a close analysis of TWO. The guidelines/questions for the close analysis are attached to this forum. For an in-depth analysis, it would be best to complete as much as the sheet as possible, or that is applicable. (Essay format if applicable)
You have closely analyzed two Emily Dickinson poems. By answering the questions on the sheet, what does your analysis suggest about the poems? About the author? Are there any similarities? Differences? What does this say about the poet? (Do not forget to attach the image of the guideline sheet for each poem)
While both the poems share the same rhythm, they are nevertheless different in voice: poem 479 is in first person, while poem 112 is in third omniscient. This change is not perhaps significant – it could be taken as Dickinson being morose in the face of her own impending mortality, but perhaps it was simply stylistic choice.
As has been said, both poems use the common ABAB format, with each verse containing four lines each. This is, most likely, a way for Dickinson to change the subject slightly with each verse: note how poem 112 shifts from talking in general terms to talking in specific terms over the course of three verses (Dickinson, 1999).
