Henry uses the characters to bring out the European-American theme. For example, Daisy and Winterbourne were born in America. However, they, in turn, take the ways of living of the European explorers who had come to America many centuries ago. Contrary to their expectations of a new paradise, the meet a society that is governed by strict rules in regard to propriety, social behavior, and attitude. Daisy is presented as a character who is ready to follow the American spirit of taking advantage of new opportunities. She does not care what other people think of her actions of experiencing new things.
