Henry James was born in America but decided to settle in Europe as an adult. He spent much of his youth traveling between American and Europe. While in Europe, he observed Europeans, Americans in Europe, and Americans who lived in Europe and assimilated. These characters and this American vs. European theme is seen throughout his writing. Henry uses the characters to bring out the European-American theme. For example, Daisy and Winterbourne were born in America. However, they, in turn, take the ways of living of the European explorers who had come to America many centuries ago. Contrary to their expectations of a new paradise, the meet a society that is governed by strict rules in regard to propriety, social behavior, and attitude. Daisy is presented as a character who is ready to follow the American spirit of taking advantage of new opportunities. She does not care what other people think of her actions of experiencing new things.
