According to the Buddha, if everything in people's lives was going smoothly, then they would not need any kind of intervention. Therefore, the eight paths were developed in an attempt to solve the problems that people go through. Buddha outlines a preliminary step preceding the eight stages of the eightfold path. The stage is known as the right association. The step is an indication that human beings are social animals, who are often influenced by the environment around them. Hence, the right association is necessary for the creation of the basis for the other eight steps (Philip & Smith, 2004).
