The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is among the most recognized emloyers in the profession that has explicitly stated the importance of written and oral communication skills in their applicants. NASW is specifically looking for candidates who excel in two crucial areas: the capacity for active listening and empathy (oral/interpersonal) and the ability to document cases accurately (written). If social workers do not start with empathetic active listening, all else will fail.

Having this skill is very important for legal liability, continuity of service, and funding justification. Records in social work are legal documents that need to be objective, factual and complete. If they are not clear, missing, or subjective, it might weaken cases in court or during an audit. Also, good documentation means that if a client moves to a different worker or provider, all intervention history goes with them. Organizations find candidates with such skills valuable because of their impact on performance and productivity.
