The novel ‘Sula’ depicts Ajax as Sula's confidant and lover. Sula and Ajax first meet in their childhood, when Ajax catcalls Saru and her friend, Nel and later in life, they develop an affair. Ajax is an energetic and a young resident of Bottom whose mysteries are hard to explain. Even though he involves himself with multiple women, he is caring and loving. He takes care of his mother, and he is cautious to avoid hurting people’s feelings. Moreover, he shows honest attentiveness to the feelings and thoughts of the women that he has an affair with. His uniqueness in the society is seen from her mother’s mysterious practices and threats towards the people.
Ajax has a desire of being free and dependent to himself. He dislikes depending on others, and his objectives in life are to go far away from Bottom to a place where he will be free to do whatever he wants. He acts as a moral supporter in the society where he tries to help his lovers when faced with unpleasant situations.
