Touchstone 3.1: Construct a Rogerian Argument
ASSIGNMENT: As you learned in this unit, a Rogerian argument is one that presents two sides of a debate and argues for a solution that will satisfy both sides. Given the two articles linked below that present opposing sides of an issue (mandatory uniforms in schools vs. some kind of ‘dress code’), construct your own 2-3 page Rogerian argument essay in which you attempt to arrive at a concrete, workable solution or "middle ground."
The essay should contain the following components:
❒ 1. An introduction that accurately presents both sources (i.e., author, title, year of publication, and their relative position in the debate), as well as your middle ground thesis statement.
❒ 2. A body paragraph that summarizes the pro-uniform rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Anderson).
❒ 3. A body paragraph that summarizes the anti-uniform/pro-dress code rationales. (Both articles can be used, but focus on Deane).
❒ 4. A body paragraph that critically compares and contrasts both sides of the debate.
❒ 5. A conclusion that further develops your proposed middle-ground solution and demonstrates how it satisfies both sides of the debate.

Introduction
Author Wendell Anderson is a researcher and author of several publications. In his publication “School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies,” published by Eric Clearinghouse on Educational Management in 2002, he thoroughly examines the diverging views on dress codes and uniform policies through arguments for and against uniform policies (Anderson, 2002, pp. 3-4). He outlines that dress codes and uniform policies should be implemented as they ensure school safety, improves learning, enhance student’s self-esteem and lessens family stress. In contrast, dress codes and uniform policies outline that they are a narrow-minded way of solving deeper problems, and they deny students their fundamental rights.
In Deane Samantha’s article “Dressing Diversity: Politics of Difference and the Case of School Uniforms,” issued in the Journal of Philosophical Studies in Education in 2015, school uniform policies face both support and opposition. The professor at Loyola University outlines that school uniforms minimize unruly behavior, eliminate socioeconomic tension and make schools where children only see the sameness of each other. She also notes that school uniforms can be expensive, particularly for low-income households, and they perpetuate a negative equalization philosophy that affects students’ perceptions (Deane, 2015, pp.112-114). The two authors present valid viewpoints on school uniforms and dress codes and a middle ground of instituting a school dress policy that permits individual expression while also upholding school guidelines is vital.
