College Composition II Touchstone 1 Name Institutional Affiliation Course Name & Number Professor Due Date Summary Anthony Pellegrini is an academic psychologist and an Early Education professor at the University of Georgia who has produced numerous publications about play, children’s behavior and social cognitive processes among preschoolers. The article “The Recess Debate: A Disjuncture between Educational Policy and Scientific Research,” aims to establish the arguments for and against recess in American and UK schools. Arguments against recess, driven mainly by school administrators, school superintendents, principals and politicians, reason that recess wastes treasured time that can otherwise be utilized for instructions or physical education and recess time allows for bullying and it is when kids learn to be aggressive (Pellegrini, 2008, p. 182).            Pellegrini also highlights two main arguments for recess in school. One is that recess offers distributed practice, which benefits learning. The argument means that children achieve better learning if it is distributed or with breaks in between instead of when concentrated. Pellegrini also argues for recess as it promotes cognitive efficiency development and facilitates learning among preschool kids. He stresses that having a break between intense learning is of immense benefit to younger children than the old.
