Categories of Abuse and Neglect
A detailed definition and description according to New York Laws;
Physical Abuse
Physical child abuse is any bodily or emotional harm inflicted by a custodian either intentionally or recklessly. Such conduct includes; slapping, hitting, kicking, biting, choking, smothering, shoving, dragging, throwing, punching, shaking, burning, cutting or the use of corporal punishment.
Examples in this category:
* 5-year-old Tamika Greene was whipped with electric cord forced to overeat until she threw up. She was later poisoned by her father CITATION Sel87 \l 1033 (Raab, 1987).
* Four-year-old Julian Shamoon died after he was beaten with broomstick for interrupting a chess game CITATION Sel87 \l 1033 (Raab, 1987).
Child Sexual Abuse
Child sex abuse is any sexual involvement between an adult and a child, including fondling,
exhibitionism, rape, incest, child pornography, and prostitution. Such acts are considered abusive
regardless of whether or not the child agreed to participate. This definition assumes that a child is unable to make a rational decision or may not be able to reduce because of adult pressure.
Examples:
* Larry Nassar, former doctor with the national gymnastics team charged with drugging and raping his patient on camera in 1992 CITATION Hau18 \l 1033 (Hauser, 2018)
* Josh Duggar son confessed to fondling four of his sisters when he was 14 years old CITATION Ass15 \l 1033 (Associated Press, 2015).
Emotional abuse- verbal abuse
According to the CITATION Mar121 \l 1033 (Marotz, 2012), this form of abuse occurs when caregivers repeatedly and unpredictably criticize, verbally assault, ignore, or belittle a child’s behavior and/or achievements.
Such conduct may include but shall not be limited to intimidation, threats, the display of a weapon or other object that could reasonably be perceived by a service recipient as a means for infliction of pain or injury, in a manner that constitutes a threat of physical pain or injury, taunts, derogatory comments or ridicule CITATION New \l 1033 (New york State Office of Children and Family Services, n.d.).
Examples of abuse in this category:
* A preschool for special needs children on Staten Island fired six staffers who had abused at least one student. They used profanities and negative things to the children CITATION Jim18 \l 1033 (Dolan, 2018)
* Karen Eubank’s son started saying he did not want to go to school. His teacher ‘yells at him all the time and we can hear it in the next room’ CITATION Jes18 \l 1033 (Kelmon, 2018).
Physical & emotional neglect
Examples in this category
CITATION Mar121 \l 1033 (Marotz, 2012) defines physical neglect as a family’s abandonment of a child or their failure to provide for the child’s basic needs and care. Additionally, Parents who leave children alone and unsupervised may be charged with physical neglect. Additionally, CITATION Mar121 \l 1033 (Marotz, 2012) specifies other forms of neglect such as educational neglect; in this case parents do not take the child to school or allow them to drop out prematurely. Parents/ custodians can also be sued for ‘medical neglect if they fail to obtain appropriate medical treatment, including immunizations, or refuse to give medications that are necessary to address children’s health and dental needs’ CITATION Mar121 \l 1033 (Marotz, 2012).

However, CITATION Mar121 \l 1033 (Marotz, 2012) defines emotional/psychological neglect as ‘Emotional neglect reflects a basic lack of parental interest and/or responsiveness to a child’s psychological needs and development.’
* Mummy, I don’t recognize you anymore because of your work CITATION Ale13 \l 1033 (Blackie, 2013).
