"The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" by Katherine Anne Porter
The main character in the story, "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" which was written by Katherine Anne Porter is Granny Weatherall who believes that she has been able to handle all the major challenges that have occurred in her life. The first hurdle that Granny had to overcome was the failure by her first to be husband to show up in church during their wedding day. Despite the fact that Granny believes that she has been able to overcome this hurdle, it is worth noting that according to her tone she has not been able to achieve this. Although she believes that, her first groom George is a distant memory; according to her tone, she feels that he outwitted her (Kennedy & Gioia, 2011).
The fact that the story is told minutes before Granny`s death shows that she had a great sense of humor. Although she is on the verge of death, it is evident that she lived a life that was full of jokes. She thinks about priest Connolly as a man who loves tea as much as he loves the souls of his followers. In addition, she says that she is not concerned much about her soul because she has angels who are always waiting to usher her into heaven. This shows that the psychology of Granny is clear and she is able to analyze peoples` behaviors and traits. She is not afraid of thinking about the people around her in the way she thinks they are (Kennedy & Gioia, 2011).
Granny is perceptive about everything that is happening around her. She does not believe that she is on the verge of dying although she says that she prepared for her death some twenty before this sickness befalls her. She is annoyed when her children start to treat her as a child for she believes that she will be okay in just a matter of days. She believes that she is a very strong woman and has been able to overcome even graver sicknesses before this one attacks her. On the other hand, one notices that she has not been prepared psychologically for her death, as she believes. However, she does not realize that she has grown old and weak (Kennedy & Gioia, 2011).
Granny is a very obsessive woman who wants things to done in her own way. This is evident from the fact that even on her deathbed she believes that she is a hardworking and better in housekeeping than her daughter Cornelia is. Although she is old and most probably senile, she believes that she not old and her children should come to her for advice as they used to do before. She remembers that she has been able to handle several jobs some of which are feminine while others are purely masculine. She was able to fence acres of land while at the same time acting as a nurse...
