Boundaries of the Literature Review
The current literature suggests that many doctoral students enroll then drop out secondary to various factors, including personal, social, and environmental aspects, which are not addressed during their stay in their postgraduate course. The most common issue is the difficulty with time management, especially for the working students, whether part-time or full-time, due to the lack of balance in their routine activities. Furthermore, the academic demands of the university are tremendous and add up to the difficulty of balancing their lives. Some studies also suggest that the challenge comes to the physical and environmental factors given by the university due to the culture of institutional neglect, requiring revisions or modifications with the doctoral degree program curricula. Other studies added factors such as the level of knowledge during the undergraduate course, such that the studies neglected to study subjects or topics that are critical in finishing their doctoral degree, the role of the doctoral degree program supervisor, level of satisfaction, financial opportunities in the future, students’ academic identity, and writing and regulatory skills (Castelló et al., 2017; Sverdlik et al., 2018; Devos et al., 2017; Litalien & Guay, 2015).
The knowledge gap is secondary to the outdatedness of the other data. Based on the literature review, the studies that have been published within the last five years concerning the subject were insufficient in numbers. Another contributing factor is the small sample size and the specificity of the published studies’ participants, which are limited to their strata, including their race, ethnicity, and residence. Furthermore, the gap is lengthened by the lack of experimental studies that provide the interventions that aid the doctoral degree program students in managing their studies while meeting their basic needs or a study that observes the interventions applied by the students. Most of the studies focus on identifying the factors without analyzing the effects of their actions.
Addressing the Problem
The study’s objectives shall be in line with the gap in the literature. Specifically, the study investigates the strategies or interventions applied by doctoral degree program students to address the challenges in their ac...
