Argumentative Essay: Millennials Student’s Name Institution Course Name and Number Lecturer’s Name Due Date Argumentative Essay: Millennials The millennials, the generation born between 1981 and 1996, have come under extensive criticism and praise. Their exposure to technology and unique upbringing has earned them positive attributes, with many describing them as hardworking and innovative (Ngotngamwong, 2019). However, some believe that this generation is lazy and self-involved. As the first generation to experience the digital age first-hand, the contributions of the millennials and their views of work relationships and society have changed significantly. This essay presents arguments that millennials are innovative and hardworking as well as lazy and self-involved. Firstly, Millennials are a highly innovative and educated generation. They have access to resources and information than the previous generations. This has enabled them to pursue a wide range of academic and professional interests. A study by Hayes et al.(2018) revealed that over 39% of millennials have at least a bachelor’s degree compared to about 25% of Baby Boomers with a similar educational level. Additionally, this generation boasts of having an entrepreneurial mind and spirit (Ngotngamwong, 2019). This is evident in the corporate world where many young people are establishing their businesses, building new industries, and turning to self-employment. This creativity level is sufficient for growing society and improving lives. According to the 2021entrepreneural Spirit Index published by Ipsos, 36% of Millennials were ranked as having a very high entrepreneurial spirit against 29% of Generation Z, 33% of Generation X, and 25% of Baby Boomers (Statistica.com, 2024). One reason millennials are choosing self-employment is increased tech capabilities. Most millennials are tech-savvy, which enables them to be creative and work online. The increased availability and accessibility of the Internet have offered job opportunities to many jobless individuals. Today, one needs basic knowledge of technology to start earning online. The internet also allows the population to learn online and connect with like-minded individuals or experienced professionals who mentor them to venture into businesses. Secondly, Millennials are more committed than other generations in the community to volunteer work. This generation has also been working in internship jobs for several hours to gain experience (Ngotngamwong, 2019). They understand that today’s job market is highly competitive and to compete effectively with others, they must gain enough experience. This leaves them with no option but to look for opportunities to advance their knowledge and skills. Upon gaining adequate experience, some millennials use the experience gained to seek jobs while others opt for self-employment. In the same context, millennials are highly industrious when they secure a job. They understand the struggles of getting employment and strive to be competitive to keep their job. The older generation had it easier to get a job with good benefits without further education and prior experience (Hess, 2020). Surpassingly, the most pro...
