The objective of this survey is to assess how opioid is being used by medical practitioners and individuals in Kingsbridge town for purposes of relieving pain. The survey will use a cross-sectional research design because it’s the most preferred and appropriate in monitoring health care necessities and the health status of a given population at a given point in time (Linnaus, M. E., et al 2019). It also brings out the relationship between diseases and risk factors since that relationship is usually unclear in most studies (Chouinard, S., et al 2018).
A sample size of one thousand participants will be selected for the survey. The participants will be requested to complete the survey form where they will provide their demographic information, gender; locality, opioid use; opioid prescription, and pain management. At least five medical practitioners in different healthcare facilities will be contacted to participate in the study. A questionnaire consisting of eight key questions which are highlighted below will be used in the survey.
1 How contented are medical practitioners in prescribing opioids to different patients in health care facilities?
2 What are medical practitioners' apprehensions about addiction, abuse, side effects, and tolerance of opioids?
3 What are the reasons for opioid use?
4 Which is the most common type of opioid being used?
5 What is the nature of the opioid use problem?
6 What is the major challenge or gap in addressing the opioid crisis?
7 Are you aware of treatment options?
8 How successful is the opioid treatment?
The first part of the form will capture information on age, gender, and locality. The first question aims at obtaining information on whether medical personnel is comfortable while administering opioids and how they manage patients. The second question seeks to obtain information on physicians' understanding of opioid use and its underlying effects. Question three seeks to obtain information on why people use or misuse opioids. In the fourth question, the respondents will be provided with a list of opioids whereby they will choose the most commonly used/abused ones.
The fifth question will require respondents to rate the opioid use challenges. Responses will be designed to range from "big problem" to "unsure" or "don't know". The sixth question will require respondents to identify problems and gaps in mitigating opioid pandemic in the localities. A list of challenges will be provided where each respondent will tick on the challenges that hinder the process of addressing the opioid problem. The seventh question will seek to obtain information on whether the respondents have an understanding of the availability of various methods of treatment. The eighth and last question will seek information on the success of treatment options undertaken by patients.
A research agency firm will be contracted to distribute and collect the survey forms. The advantage of working with such a firm is that they can easily identify the population which suits my research needs and reach many people as may be necessary. They apply a variety of methods to collect responses and manage the process to remove false responses once they are through with the survey. With this, a researcher can also contact respondents once you have received the feedback. Since a research agency will be assisting in the survey, they will select the participants themselves but those who reside in Kingsbridge and various states in the US.
Testing the reliability and validity of the questionnaire is important to enhance the accuracy and consistency of measurement tools (Chung, K. C., et al 1998). The two are not aligned hence in as much as reliability is required it is not enough to determine validity (Brazier, J. E., et al 1992). To achieve this, a test-retest exercise is conducted whereby the researcher administers the same survey on the same respondents again to see whether the responses from participants are consistent. The researcher will also use Principal Components Analysis (PCA) which helps in identifying underlying aspects being measured by the survey. Also, a pilot test will be run using approximately 20 % of the sample to remove questions that are not relevant for the study.
