Sappho, Fragment 16
Fragment 16 is one of the most popular pieces of Sappho’s work of poetry. Sappho, a Greek poet, used poetry to express love and desire for a beautiful woman. In this context, Sappho expresses love and desire for an unknown beautiful woman. Importantly, she expresses a longing desire for a lover and wishes to be near. Importantly, she describes the effect of emotion she has on her to be more radiant and charming than chariots and armies with horses.
I would much prefer to see the lovely

than the war chariots of the Lydians or

Toward the end, she asks, Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, to help her win the love of the beloved. Even though the fragment is incomplete, it shows the significance of love and the goddesses of love. Art and poetry played a key role in ancient Greek in the expression of love and beauty. Notably, Aphrodite was associated with love, beauty, and desire. She was known for fertility, physical pleasure, grace, beauty, and eternal youth. He was engaged and adored by many ancient Greeks for the power of love in both its positive and negative connotations.
Thucydides', History of the Peloponnesian War, Book 3, Chapter 38
In this context, Thucydides highlights the power of speeches in the formation of democracy. Also, he highlights the power of public opinion in decision-making during the war between Athens and Sparta. Importantly, Thucydides’ work describes the Peloponnesian War, which occurred between 431 and 404 BCE. In this context, Thucydides describes the year of war 429 BCE, and the early phases of the formation of democracy (Thucydides, 3. 38). Further, Thucydides emphasizes the significance of the power of persuasive rhetoric holds and its effect on the occurrence of events. In a convincing tone, he argues that speeches given by powerful figures in Greek held the power to change the course of the people and their actions. Further, he emphasized that speeches evoked the emotions, pride, and self-interest of people, rather than objective reasoning.
Additionally, he argued that a speech from public figures could be untrue and manipulative. Thus, before taking any claims to heart, the listeners needed to carefully evaluate the message as public figures had mastered the art of oration and they did not align with reality. This meant that people individuals had the choice to make a judgment based on the reality and authenticity of their leaders (Mitchell, 2008). Thucydides' evaluation was a result of the establishment of democracy where ancient Greeks had the opportunity to participate in what was happening.
