Nobody has a clear understanding of the number of spoken languages across the globe. However, a certain approximation indicates between 3000 and 4000 languages (Wang & Chen, 2013). These languages differ from each other regarding writing styles, sentence construction, grammar and sound. The China and United States’ size insinuate that in the coming future, people will be using Chinese and English as a language of official communication. The two languages, however, contrast a lot and thus fail to provide a perfect writing communication. This paper discusses the contrast between the two languages.
Literature Review
Bada & Genc acknowledge the fact that a language is highly influenced by culture. It is the culture that shapes its writing structure. They also point out that the popularity of a language depends on several factors which makes attain a global status. The factors are none other than military, social and political supremacy among others. English as a United States language has gained global status and it is thus referred to as a ‘lingua franca’. The researchers as well identify that English language in some states has faced pessimism as these nations pursue the identity of languages. However, in academic writing, these nations acknowledge that English has attained scientific recognition internationally.
Research by Yang on the challenges faced by international Chinese students when adapting to academic English Communities in higher educational institutions points out pedagogy and language difficulties as some of the challenges. It is found that these Chinese students are not well prepared when it comes to proficiency in English. These students report that English academic writing is particularly very frustrating among other problems for instance listening and speaking. They say that the difference in writing styles between the Chinese and English proves to be the greatest hurdle especially to those students undertaking social sciences. The major problems fall in the four categories as identified by the researcher. The categories include; rhetorical organization, the accuracy of sentence-level and vocabulary, the conventions and expectations of English academic writing.
