Euchee is an endangered language that is spoken by traditional Americans who live in the South East of the United States. The origin of the Euchee language is not really known since it does not resemble any other American language. The tribe was however documented by the Spanish explorer by the name Hernando de Soto in 1541 as one of the most powerful tribes of the time. Existing evidences shows that there were several Euchee towns in the 18th century than there are currently. Most of the Euchee speakers were forcibly relocated to Oklahoma in the early 19th century.
Moreover even though they had an opportunity to separate themselves from the Mvskoke creeks in 1938, they totally refused to do so. Their leadership was under the traditional chief, they were able to maintain strong cultural and linguistic traditions until the 1950s. At the moment only a few elderly speakers of the Euchee language still remain. The current population of Euchee community was estimated to be about 2,400 by the year 2010.
However, the number of native Euchee speakers has continued to dwindle over the years, as those remaining do not speak fluent Euchee. (Wikipedia, 2014). The Euchee headquarter is found in Sapulpa, Oklahoma and it is headed by their tribal chief known as Andrew Skeeter. Being a language Isolate, Euchee is not known as being related to other languages: however, the Euchee has been claimed by different linguistics. The language that Euchee is closely related to is with the Siouan family: Sapir in 1921 and the Haas language in 1951, the Elmendorf in 1964, the Rudus in 1974 and Crawford in 1979. At the moment, the existing Euchee are of Multi tribal descent. Most of them are citizens of the Muscogee (Creek) nation. Other Euchee speakers come from tribes such as the Sauk and fox nation and the Shawnee.
