Antibiotics have been important in treating diseases, but misuse and abuse of antibiotics makes bacteria drug resistant to antibiotics. After bacterial infection the immunity level becomes low, and antibiotics help to shield the body from further infection through increased immunity. Thus, antibiotics may kill microorganisms especially bacteria or inhibit their reproduction and growth but the rise in antibiotic resistance is a cause for concern for researchers as this leads to rise in healthcare costs, as there are few cheap alternatives for treating bacterial infection. Use of antibiotics depends on the type of infection, but patients ought to follow the physician’s advice and continue with the medication for the recommended period. Discontinuing use of antibiotics and subsequent incomplete course in use of antibiotics may build up anti microbial resistance.
Physicians typically prescribe use of antibiotics if there is bacterial infection, and the use of antibiotics in the treatment of flu and colds is discouraged as these are viral infections. Even though, it is mostly used in people with weakened immunity, people with good immunity systems can also use antibiotics especially in case of surgeries. During surgery, it is possible that bacteria can attach themselves to the heart valves and enter the body through the blood stream, especially when patients have weakened heart valves (Olesen & Olesen, 2005).
In spite of the importance of antibiotics in treating bacterial infections over the years, there has been rise in cases of antibiotic resistance bacteria leading to creation of super bugs. Anti bacterial resistance occurs when microorganisms withstand the effect of antimicrobial medicines, with such cases increasing mortality among patients. In essence, resistant microorganisms make the antibiotics to be ineffective increasing...
