In the experimentation, the goal was to define the effects of the varying concentration of vinegar in calcium carbonate. It entailed varying the concentration of vinegar, which was later on mixed with calcium carbonate. The concentration of vinegar was determined by mixing volume of water with vinegar such that the two made up a 10ml solution. On mixing this solution with calcium carbonate, different reaction rates were observed by monitoring the inflation rate of a balloon that had been fixed on the mouth of the reacting volumetric flask.
Vinegar being acidic i.e. acetic acid reacted with calcium carbonate. In chemistry, it is a fact that an acid and a base react to form salt and water and this experiment was no different. The two reacted to form salt: calcium acetate and water plus carbon dioxide in form of fizzing little bubbles. This carbon dioxide gas produced is what inflated the balloon. In addition, to take note is that during the reaction, the chemical bonds in both the acetic acid and calcium carbonate are broken thus leading to the production of heat.
However, on the reaction rate / rate of balloon inflation, the higher the concentration of the vinegar, the higher the rate of reaction and subsequent production of carbon dioxide gas. This is because high concentration means high levels of acidity hence a faster reaction with the base in the process of ‘neutralization’ to form sa...
