Equilibrium

Institution:
People are always trying to maintain balance in their lives. If they are not trying to eat balanced diets, they are trying to balance their spending with how much they earn and how much they need to save and invest. At the same time nature is also trying to balance the elements within the natural world, such as the number of predators against the number of prey and the green vegetation.
In chemistry, there are reactions that take place most of which are visible while others are not. Ideally, every other chemical visible or not, are trying to achieve balance. The chemical balance is referred to as equilibrium. Within any chemical reaction, there are two sides of the balance. On one side are the reactants and on the other are the products. While it is easy to assume that once the products are formed the reaction comes to an end, it not true, as reactions are in a constant state finding the balance. This means that, once the products are formed if the conditions allow, the products may then go back to the original state as reactants. This is an indication that reactions can take the form of a forward reaction, where reactants form products and they may also take the reverse reaction where the products form the reactants. In the event that a given reaction can take both forms energy must not be dispensed in the reverse process.
There are three factors that affect the balance of any reaction, which include temperature, pressure and the concentration. In chemistry there are reactions that produce heat and there are those that need heat. The latter are called endothermic while the former are called the exothermic. If temperature on the side of the reactants is increased in an endothermic reaction, the process will increase the rate reaction and more products formed. If heat is increased on th...
