Issues of Sex and Gender

Essay Instructions:
Identify an issue that is facing our society today that is in some way related to sex and/or gender and has opposing sides. Consider a law that was recently put into or taken out of effect or is being debated. You could also look to the statements or actions of a public figure or organization that has generated significant attention from the media. The issue you select should have ample material from which you may pull to gain insight into the details surrounding it. Feel free to email your instructor if you would like to verify that an issue is appropriate or if you would like some suggestions as to what you could cover. Explore multiple sides of the issue you have selected until you have a good understanding as to why each side believes it is right. Research the historical events that have caused the circumstances of this issue. Engage in discussions with others who have strong feelings about the issue to learn the reasons why they feel they way they do. Make sure you research both sides thoroughly as your goal with this paper will be to write it in a manner that does not allow the reader to know which side of the issue that you are on. You will not be condoning or condemning either side- your goal is to be as objective as possible in reviewing the issue you select. Construct a 1,000-1,250 word essay that demonstrates your understanding of the following: The issue that you have identified (a concise synopsis of what the issue is) Historical context (previous events in history that have contributed to the rise of the issue) Both sides of the current argument (provide an objective review- the reader should not know which side of the issue that you personally are on) At least two possible resolutions to the issue (include the potential ramifications of each resolution for both sides) Your paper should include an introduction and conclusion, at least 5 cited references (only 2 of which may be your discussions with others, excluding those identified as subject matter experts in your writing), and must adhere to APA formatting.

Title Your Name Subject and Section Professor’s Name Date Transgender Rights in Accessing Public Facilities In this era, where gender equality is being promoted, there are still issues regarding sex and gender. In this light, the issue of transgender rights sparked numerous debates and controversy. There is an issue concerning the transgender people’ rights in accessing public facilities such as comfort rooms. There is a binary segregation in comfort rooms wherein the male and female gender are assumed based on norms of anatomy (Crissman et al., 2019; Dubin et al., 2021; Platt & Milam, 2017; Renley et al., 2022). Moreover, there are areas that have been specially designated as comfort rooms for people with disabilities. As a result, even with many of the efforts made to ensure that gender equality is achieved, there are some issues which have remained unresolved. Therefore, this paper gives an insight on the historical perspectives of transgender rights in public facilities along with representative persuasions and possible solutions. Historical Context Gender segregation is part of some societal norms and institutional practices deeply rooted in the transgender fight for rights. The comfort rooms, a facility open to the public, are always assigned based on gender, which includes males and females. The reinforcement of this dichotomous awareness has led to discrimination based on transgender (Crissman et al., 2019; Dubin et al., 2021; Platt & Milam, 2017; Renley et al., 2022). The lack of legal policies and societal stigmatization caused transgender individuals to encounter systemic marginalization and exclusion from public spaces. The societal norms and people's perception of gender identity resulted into discrimination (Crissman et al., 2019; Dubin et al., 2021; Platt & Milam, 2017; Renley et al., 2022). Since the discriminatory practices of people against transgender people are alarming, the LGBTQ+ group has made movements that aim to protect transgender people. The group advocates for the recognition and inclusion of transgender people in all aspects of society. For instance, the Stonewall riot in 1969 made a significant impact in the battle for the rights of the LGBTQ+. The group has become more visible and accepted by society. Gradually, over the years, the collaborative efforts of the group resulted to victories. They have been recognized in various aspects of life (Taylor et al., 2018). However, despite all these movements for their rights and the victories that came along with them, they still face challenges. As aforementioned, there is an issue concerning their access to public places such as the comfort rooms. Transgender individuals attempt to use comfort rooms that correspond to their gender identity, causing them harm. They face harassment, violence, and discrimination upon these attempts. Hence, there is a need to advocate further the rights of the transgender individuals through legal policies and societal education. Therefore, the struggle for transgender rights to access comfort rooms is deeply rooted in society. Society’s acceptance and attitude towards gender are not yet developed, which ...
