Rational choice theory (RCT) is one of the most widely used perspectives for designing crime prevention programs. In particular, RCT applies the precepts of classical criminology, depicting that individuals are free to choose their behaviors and that they are motivated to do pleasurable things and avoid painful encounters (Myers, 2016). In that light, crime can be deterred through punishment and making people understand that they will experience pain if they engage in criminal activities.
One of the programs that were designed by using RCT is the Aggression Replacement Training (ART). Specifically, ART is a crime prevention program that promotes pro-social behavior among chronically aggressive people in society (CrimeSolutions.gov, 2020). Based on the risk assessment, individuals who have been involved in crime or are aggressive have a high probability of getting involved in criminal activities. ART program has been effective in crime and recidivism reduction in the United States of America (USA).
