When crimes happen, it is easy to record the data by government agencies, the society leaders, or non-governmental agencies involved in such research. Three major ways, including official statistics, victimization surveys, and report surveys, are useful when gathering such data. The three cannot have the same results, hence begging the question on the most appropriate methods to record crime trends. The best method to record data is by official statistics.
According to the Office for National Statics (n.d) of the United Kingdom, official statistics is a more comprehensive method for gathering data on crime. It records crimes captured by police, and those reported to them. When agencies release data on crime, they are captured by the security agencies and merged with the existing data, filtered, and the final figure released.
