Thus, the police have adopted tools such as field laptops, geography information systems, enhanced record management and automated computer-aided dispatch systems (Deflem & Chicoine, 2018, pp. 236-237). These tools increase the police’s ability to collect and store mass data, making it easier to identify terror threats and potential targets for terrorist attacks. Also, through technology, they have adopted crime mapping laboratories that analyze crime and map potential terror attack threats promptly, facilitating terrorism prevention. Terrorism has impacted policing by requiring data sharing with other agencies. Data sharing is the system of law enforcement agencies sharing large amounts of data in different jurisdictions, from state police, the FBI, and Homeland Security to other institutions such as schools, hospitals, and city departments. Over the years, the FBI and Homeland Security have discovered patterns of behaviour in different areas, which on their own do not raise alarm but, when documented together, create a picture of terrorist attack plans. For example, after the 911 attack, authorities unearthed several suspicious activities in New Jersey, Florida and Maryland, which together resulted in the attack (Deflem & Chicoine, 2018, pp. 237-239).
