Private Prisons Name Institution Course and Code Professor Date Private Prisons Any confinement facility that the government contracts, owns, and is operated by private individuals, is a private prison. The government pays the institution a monthly rate for every inmate they hold. Ownership status is the main difference between private and public prisons, as the local, state, or federal government wholly operates public prisons. The central aspect observed in private prisons is profit-making (Brewer, 2024), which occurs in two main ways. First, the government pays private prisons for every inmate they hold; therefore, the more inmates they have, the more profit they make. Second, inmates labor force, where they are used to provide labor; hence, no workers are employed. As such, profit is made from the cheap labor offered by prisoners. Additionally, the products and services produced by prisoners are sold at higher prices, maximizing profits (Brewer, 2024). From this aspect, private prisons have strengths and weaknesses.
