Organizational effectiveness has sometimes been confused for a proper operating organization. An effective organization is one that achieves its objectives. Organizational effectiveness ensures an organization is strategically placed to achieve greater performance, productivity, and efficiency, which are important components for an organization success. In a criminal justice organization, proper management of the personnel is vital for an effective operation of the firm (Markgraf, 2014). To understand the essence of the practice, it is necessary to define what organizational effectiveness is and what it entails. Just like in other organization, managers in a criminal justice organization need to employ theories of organizational effectiveness to facilitate proper management of the personnel. Organizational control is also essential for enhancing organizational effectiveness. Managers of a criminal justice organization can utilize various methods of exerting control such as prioritizing, feedback and tasks focus, as ways to emphasize the need to achieve organizational objectives that are a prerequisite for the realization of the firms’ mission and vision. To enhance organizational effectiveness in the management of criminal justice personnel, it is essential for managers to understand by defining the concept of organizational effectiveness, apply the theories of organizational effectiveness, and use various methods of exerting control in an organizational setting.
Definition of Organizational Effectiveness
Different scholars define the concept ‘organizational effectiveness’ in various ways all leading to explaining how organizations achieve their success in the market. According to Lewis, (2007), the concept is defined by the ability of an organization to achieve the greatest desired outcome in its operations through the realization of the entity’s objectives. Mihalicz (2012) stresses that organizational effectiveness is more than just achieving profit targets. The author affirms that the concept focuses on the overall effectiveness in various short-term goals including the ability of an organization to meet its sustainability goals that concerns its roles in the environment, communication, leadership, strategy, innovation, talent management, and corporate culture. Although organizational effectiveness can mean different things to different organization, it describes the holistic nature of organizational management criteria aimed at ensuring the various objectives of an entity are spearheaded to make the vision and mission of the organization a reality. Mihalicz (2012) asserts that organizations have different ways through which to achieve their organizational effectiveness, all which may be directed towards the achievement of similar objectives. This demonstrates that the means through which an organization positions its self to achieve organizational effectiveness does not matter, but what matters is whether such strategies could facilitate the attainment of a competitive edge, which is essential for organizations’ survival in the high competitive global market of the 21st century.
Application of Theories of Organizational Effectiveness to the Management of Criminal Justice Personnel
Organizational effectives depend on how an entity is capable of managing its personnel to adapt to the organizational environment. In a criminal justice organization, the personnel have the obligation to deliver adequate performance in their pursuit to promote justice in the society, which is a very sensitive matter. A criminal justice organization operates in highly challenging environment that needs meticulousness in the pursuance of organizational objectives in order to realize the desired goals (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2014).
