Identify three problems surrounding the incarceration of women in prison.
The three problems surrounding incarcerated women in prison are; separation from family, physical and mental challenges, and insufficient vocational and educational programs (Prison Professors. 2017). Separation of the family is usually emotional for children and their mothers and might cause depression, anxiety, and anger. Mental challenges emanate from the failure to deal with the psychological impacts or causes of the incarceration process.
What are the long and short-term consequences of these problems?
The short-term consequences of these problems are that these women end up with diseases and unwanted pregnancies while also enduring debilitating stress or trauma. The long-term impact is that the future society will be dysfunctional since these are the same women who will be out there, expected to be mothers, aunts, or even professionals.
Which of these problems do you believe to be the most damaging?
The most damaging of them all is the physical and mental health problems. Physical problems are those that can be seen or directed at the woman’s body. They often get sexually abused while in the cells, and some endure harrowing experiences. Mental health, on the other hand, registers all the traumatic experiences that the woman goes through during incarceration. Failing to properly address their physical and mental health demands leaves a lifetime scar on these women, thereby becoming the most damaging.
