Megan’s law is a federal law in the United States that requires law enforcement bodies to avail all information about registered sex offenders to the public. The law was created after a young Megan Kanka was raped and brutally murdered by a convicted sex offender, Jesse Timendequas. The sex offender had been released after serving a maximum sentence. Megan’s law is a subsection of the Jacob Wetterling Act of 1994 that only required a sex offender to register with the area law enforcement (Matson & Lieb, 1997). Successful lobbying by the community members resulted in the enactment of the legislation requiring all sex offenders to register and the public notified that he/she is living among them in the community within a specified period. As a result similar laws have since been passed in all the 50 states.
The public are mostly notified of the registration of a sex offender in their vicinity through the social media platforms such as Facebook and twitter. In addition, the local law enforcement can put the information in pamphlets and handout to the people; they can publicize the sex offender’s information on the local newspaper and/or display the information on free public websites (Regehr & Alaggia, 2006). The notification usually includes:
* The sex offenders full names.
* A clear and recent picture/photo of the sex offender.
* Residential address of the sex offender. Work address can also be added.
* The date the sex offender was imprisoned.
* The offence that necessitated his/her incarceration.
The information provided is intended to help the public from the dangerous offenders living among them.
