The stereotype provides a picture of the gang members who are portrayed as illiterate, repentant criminals immersed in their dirt and without desire to improve. However, gang members going to college defeat these notions and paint a picture of aspiration, survival, and purposeful planning. Comparing Stereotypes to Reality It is often presumed that the gang member is a confirmed criminal with no intention of changing their education or career in other activities apart from the gang.
