Caudillos, or “strong man” in Latin America was typified with a political vacuum. Juan Manuel de Rosas, an archetypal caudillos, reigned in Argentina between 1829 and 1852 (Winn, 2006). De Rosas was an immensely rich and powerful man who owned large parcels of land and vast amounts of cattle. As powerful as he was, he ruled as a monarch kingdom and became remarkably popular among the poor Argentinians, who epitomized his image. The reason why the Argentinians supported the Rosas was that he was a very wealthy tyrant, and that they could not survive devoid of the support. In Rosas’ words, the tyrant claimed that he had acquired an immense influence over the poor Argentinians to direct and control their lives. He had literary made himself appear a gaucho to them (Winn, 2006). He succeeded by pretending to belong to the lower class and won their support.
