W. Brands states that since Reconstruction, the United States has lived out of times of crisis and reinvention that have tested its national identity over and over. The conflicting perspectives on freedom, economic development, and the persistence of inequality affected American identity after 1877. Since the period of emancipation though the civil rights period, the country had restructured liberty but fought within the confines that was determined by race, classes and power. This essay contends that despite the radical things that had happened to the economy and ideals of democracy in the United States, one could still find older hierarchies of race and inequality that showed a pattern of change superimposed on continuity within the American experience. Reconstruction and the Rebirth of Freedom The Civil War represented freedom and instability. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that "all persons held as slaves ... are, and henceforward shall be free" (State Library of North Carolina, 2009). This political good deed changed the aim of the war, which was to preserve the union to the cause of human freedom. but the meaning of freedom was controversial. In the National Archives, the original document by Lincoln himself sheds light on his grand vision and it signified the further growth of federal authority in the name of liberty. (National Archives, 2022). Former slaves had a new challenge of reconstructing their lives and demanding identity. In Changing Names, three freedpeople recount that they took new surnames as independence. Martin Jackson remembered, "We had to register as someone, so we could be citizens ... I made up my mind I'd find me a different one" (Facing History & Ourselves, 2016). In this action, which is very minor and at the same time significant, freedpeople asserted their identities, renouncing names associated with slavery. These testimonies demonstrate freedom as a political ruling and a highly subjective process of self-identification. Although these were the dreams, the promise of Reconstruction did not last long. According to Foner (2011), a system of white supremacy and federal government withdrawal dismantled Black political achievement forming a system of segregation that took generations. The Reconstruction failure was an illustration of how ancient hierarchies were readjusting to maintain privilege despite new democratic rights being developed. The Social Construction of Race and Economic Inequality The failure of reconstruction led to other orders of racial relations that became entangled in economic building. Adukia et al.
