Essay Instructions:

WHAT IS A RESPONSE PAPER?

A well-conceived response paper reads like the internal conversation that you have with yourself while engaging with the course material (lectures or readings). I want you to respond to the material from the class. What did you find interesting? What surprised you?

WHAT GOES IN IT?

Tell me the things that you learned Did anything stick out? Think about the bigger picture. Why should we care about things that happened 100s of years ago?

DOES IT NEED TO BE “FORMAL”?

You can write a journal/blog type entry. You can record a voice or video reflection. You can include images and other media. If you have an idea about how you want to construct the response and you are unsure if it is acceptable, just ask.

HOW LONG SHOULD THEY BE?

Each of these will cover 3-4 weeks of lecture. They should be long enough to engage with most of that material at least a bit. Therefore I would suggest at least 600 words. Again if you are worried, just ask.

I learned in this chapter of Bananas or Containment about the history of Guatemala and Cuba with their relationship with the United States. It was really interesting as to how these two countries are what they are now. Both countries presented much force to save their own country to people who take advantage of their power. It is not that different from today’s generation to other countries as they still take action when a person in power is overwhelming with greed and injustice. The ups and downs of both countries represent their love and passion to take independence and call their country their home.
This Vietnam chapter tackled the great history behind the beautiful country of Vietnam. It was also interesting as the people who wanted to create a country for themselves were divided into two, which depicts the idea that people have different perceptions of the country that they want to live in. The heartbreaking part of this is when the war broke out and many people suffered from it, especially those who are not privileged. Although in the end, communists were still the ones to won which can be a reason why communist people are still alive as of now.
The Civil Rights chapter contains the different aspects of the Civil Rights Movement which implies various stands for equality. It was very provocative when people segregate themselves due to skin color since it is not the basis for people to say that they are more supreme than the other. Just like what happened to Jo Ann Robinson who was harassed and harmed on her trip because she sat on the chair for white people. It is heartbreaking to see that kind of perspective to people, especially if they think that they are entitled to do it.
While in the second part of the Civil Rights chapter, it was interesting that despite the racial discrimination happening during the Civil Rights Movement, there are still people who are desiring a place that concerns justice and equality. The idea of The Great Society can be seen as a dream to some people who want to live in a country that is peaceful and reserved. Although in reality, it is quite frustrating that despite the people who pursue this kind of thinking, nothing is still happening due to the people who dislike equality and have a thirst for power. It saddens me that people are being overwhelmed with greed and selfishness to the point that it could harm other individuals.
On the other hand, in the chapter of The Rights Movement, I learned the value of physical labor and gender equality. I now understand the har...
