The progressive era was a time when there were short-lived reformed when it came to the distribution of resources and better representation in terms of governance. The era heralded a time when there was a great improvement and progress when it came to technological advancement, efficiency and hence, growth of the American society. While the era brought with it numerous benefits such as increased job openings ad more opportunities for everyone, it also brought about numerous challenges in the society.
Workers often suffered mistreatment while the high levels of corruption in the upper governmental echelons often led to a skewed distribution of wealth among the people. Inequality of class and race was still rampant. Du Bois tried advocating for equal rights for each race, especially the blacks. Lewis Hines, an investigative photographer, brought to the fore the evils of child labor. Thomas Nast and Jacob Riss, two household names when it came to the showbiz and entertainment industry at the time, highlighted the reality of poverty through “How the other half lives.” Despite all these efforts however, the progressive era experienced very little in terms of social reforms.
There were efforts by Roosevelt however, to expose political corruption and their kingpins, through formulation of laws that would lock them out of any public office. These included the Sherman Antitrust Act, which acted as a prelude to the Clayton Act of 1914. The Square Deal...
