Factors that lead to Truman’s decision for the atomic bomb Name: Institution: What factors likely motivated President Truman to authorize the use of atomic bombs against Japan in August 1945? In the august of the year 1945, Truman as the president of the United States ordered the atomic bomb on Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki). There are a couple of factors that were given as to why the president had ordered the drop, while some are theorized in the political and scholarly circles (US History, 2013). At the time, the war was almost over, and even though the Japanese were still fighting the Americans, they were looking to a means to end it, as they had no chance whatsoever of coming out on top (Dowling, 2001). One of the factors that lead to the use of the atomic bomb on Japan was the fact that USSR had started to invade Japan in a renewed insurgence. The USA did not want the USSR involved in the invasion of Japan. This is because it would have lead to the USSR claiming some of the territorial gains for helping the USA out on the invasion. The USA anticipated that the war would cause insurmountable loss of life to the American citizen. As such, the atomic bomb was the most clinical end to the war. As the Japanese would fall back due to the devastation and thus the lives of millions of the Americans that were at risk were salvaged. This also served his other factor of ending the war. The USA wanted to end the war quick and with a statement to soviets and the other nations, as such the bomb brought out that effect and quickly brought the war to an end, as Japan surrendered unconditionally (US History, 2013). It is also theorized that that was also the power factor.
