What is his/her point of view? Does he/she make a convincing case? Why or why not? What does the author leave out (if anything)? Does the author exhibit a particular bias? Is there anything in this source that might be relevant to the world today?



Note: Depending on the source you choose, not all of the above questions may be relevant. Answer those which are relevant to your source.



 



Try to select a document/source that interests you. If it is a topic/person that you are unfamiliar with, be sure to do at least a little research to give you a better background for analyzing the source. If you would like to use additional sources (internet web sites, books, periodicals, etc.,) you are more than welcome to, as long as your focus is on the primary source. Your essay should consist of two sections: a summary of the article and then an analysis of the article. 



In writing your essay, you should follow the below guidelines:

The 1951 Korean War had dramatic impacts on the civilian population. In reality, over three and four million Korean civilians either lost their lives, were wounded or went missing during the three years of war- 1950-1953 (Kwak & Millett, 2011). Not only did the war cause casualties, but it also led to the division of North and South Korea- leaving them in a state where they cannot visit or communicate with each other. Also, the war significantly contributed to the fall of most Korean industries leading to poor economic performance and poverty among the people of the two states. The war also had substantial effects on other countries associated with the war. For instance, the war led to the deaths of over 50,000 American soldiers as well as an increase in the defense budget with over $12 billion between the years 1951 to 1953 (Morris-Suzuki, 2015). Similarly, the war increased tension between China and all communist powers.
Causes of the war
           The 1951 Korean War started with the invasion of South Korea by North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union. The end of world war two meant the onset of peace and prosperity for Americans and other people around the world. However, for Koreans, it epitomized difficulty and tensions. Typically, in the first half of the 20th century, Korea was part of the Japanese empire. This only lasted until the fall of Japan during the Second World War. In the fall, Korea became free and was determined to decide the fate of their own country. As a result, many Koreans advocated and campaigned for unified states (Stueck, 2013). However, the Soviet Union and the United States of America had divergent opinions. While the USA wanted to establish democracy in the region, the Soviet Union wanted to expand communism to the area (KIM, 2017). The disagreement fueled the situation and eventually led to the Korean War. The Korean War can be termed as the first battle of the cold war fought between the United States and soviet communists.
           The article “Medicine in the Korean war, 1951” by Robert Hall is an intriguing and informative piece that vividly shows the effects and casualties of the Korean War. The article explains the challenges that the troops faced during the war. First, Robert explains the battle at Chipyong-ni that symbolized the primary defeat of Chinese since they entered the war. It was in Chipyong-ni that helicopter ambulances were used to transport severely wounded casualties from battlefield to hospitals. Robert discusses medical problems that the troops faced, among them the fierce Korean winter. Korean temperature varied from time to time, and winter clothing was not issued to all the soldiers.
