Introduction
The worldview entails the fundamental reality basis shared across cultures and comprises categories, values, assumptions, and perspectives that provide a critical lens into how persons perceive their environment. Given worldviews broadened rationales, individuals have different viewpoints, although similarities are also notable within communities, families, and cultures. Spirituality influences an individual’s perspectives and worldviews, and therefore, it is essential to consider its applications within healthcare contexts. The philosophical rationales relating to scientism and postmodernism are contemporary setbacks to complete recognition of the role of spirituality within healthcare contexts (Puchalski, 2001). Despite having a unique scientific background, my Christian faith significantly impacts my personality and worldview. In this report, I will delineate Christian spirituality compared to modern scientism and relativism perspectives and ultimately discuss worldview questions as per my understanding.
Christianity Perspectives and Postmodern Relativism
The holy bible is the fundamental and the reference instrument for Christians whenever they encounter difficult times, including sickness. The Christian comprehension of nature is that God intervenes and controls every aspect of their lives. For example, when faced with misfortunes, including illness, Christians consider it God’s responsibility to heal them. In this vein, some Christians are increasingly reluctant to seek medical attention from the hospital as they discredit postmodern recuperation practices. Within this context, healthcare providers are coerced to tailor their treatment approaches to meet patient’s spiritual needs and demands. An individuals’ inner beliefs impact their healing journey either indirectly or directly. Customizing medical services to clients anchored on their spirituality improves their interaction and confidence in healthcare providers and fastens the healing process. Christian beliefs in practices such as prayers, deities, and rituals, including sacrifices, constitute the defining spirituality hallmark (Stenmark, 2017). Such practices are the fundamental spiritual instruments influencing healthcare.
The postmodernist relativism current ideologies constitute a primary rationale for Christianity spirituality existence within healthcare and nursing. Postmodern relativism entails the perspective that downplays proclamations relating to comprehensive knowledge, scientific rationality, and reasoning. The perception holds that facts are associated with perspicacity. The postmodern relativism perspective serves to undermine spiritualism since it negates pluralism rationales (Duignan, 2020). For example, postmodern relativism indicates that humans are not special in any way compared to other organisms or even non-living things. In this way, it ignores the need for patient-centeredness in healthcare provisions, making it challenging for nursing practice as there are constrained truths and no need for focus on humanity and compassion.
Scientism
Scientism is the conviction that scientific methodologies constitute the only feasible approaches in which individuals could secure information concerning diverse issues (Stenmark, 2017). Also, scientism includes efforts to incorporate scientific methods, practices, attitudes, and ideas into political concerns or human social issues (Burnett, 2021). That said, scientism faces several criticisms, which entails the fundamental rationale as well as the self-referential incoherence rationale. The fundamental justification against scientism is centered on the argument that although people employ science and that science offers information, this knowledge is not anchored on scientific issues. In this vein, science solely offers information for problems that have investigated and designed itself, thus justifying its findings to constitute knowledge. For example, scientism examines natural elements and natural processes to derive findings and make inferences. Science also depends on introspection, memory, and logic, amongst other natural methodologies. Therefore, if all scientific knowledge sources do not constitute knowledge or information, natural science cannot be termed as knowledge either. In this vein, if science offers insights, it could solely accomplish since the non-scientific framework also provides information systems (Stenmark, 2017).
The second postulation against scientism constitutes self-referential incoherence. This rationale against scientism derives its basis from the philosophical background. It posits that scientism thesis that solely natural sciences offer knowledge or reliable information is within itself natural science product. In this vein, this thesis fails to realize its criteria, and it is increasingly challenging to depend on or believe it based on set standards within basic scientific studies (Stenmark, 2017). Therefore, there is no rationale to prove scientism truths, making it challenging to embrace or think scientism rationally. There is no reason to believe in scientism since one is unable to determine its authenticity.
