Work of the Robert Wood Foundation Committee Initiative
1. Introduction
For a long time, the nursing system in the integrated health system was called fragmented and scattered in many ways. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has produced various reports to reform the field of medicine and build capacity by addressing key issues in nursing. The IOM reports help coordinate important steps that contribute to quality health care. Some of the IOM's reports include the Robert Wood Foundation Commission's report on an initiative to drive change, improve health, and increase the value of health care.
2. Work of the Robert Wood Foundation Committee Initiative
Launched in partnership with the Institute of Medicine, the Robert Wood Foundation Committee (RWFC) initiative is a brilliant and unique vision for shaping how work is done. Ideally, the group developed a vision to completely redefine the healthcare landscape to address the US healthcare system's major health challenges (IOM, 2011). The institute and foundation produced a report supporting health care organizations that rely heavily on primary care and prevention systems as a key factor in strengthening the US health care system.
Traditionally, commissions such as the IOM have recognized that the healthcare system, including the nursing profession, needs drastic changes. An example of the report's recommendation calls for an 80% increase in the number of registered nurses.
The RWFC has partnered with the IOM to develop and build on a nearly two-year initiative to create an action-based roadmap to help the nursing profession and its future (Bowles et al., 2019). In addition, it means significant changes in organizational and public policy at the local, state, and national levels.
3. Key Messages
The Robert Wood Committee team developed four key messages to guide the transformation needed in the healthcare industry. These four key messages are described as follows:
3. 1. Nurses must Apply their Education and Receive the Necessary Education
The report suggests ways to transform healthcare to achieve higher quality healthcare. As in any other field, education is essential for any organization to achieve its business and results (IOM, 2011). Based on this argument, the organization supports the full use of nursing education and the provision of deep learning in learning environments. The institute says that nurses should be provided with a stimulating environment where they can practice and learn without restrictions. It recommends that nurses receive the same extensive professional training and be treated with respect as their medically trained colleagues. As a result, this equitable education should positively impact the country's healthcare system.
3. 2. Access to Nurses and Policy Planning and Development
Some indications are that using skilled nurses can improve the quality of care. It can be increased by hiring more nurses or joining the healthcare industry. As the number of nurses increases, the nurse-patient ratio decreases. A reduced nurse-to-patient ratio would allow qualified nurses to care for fewer patients. In this case, the problems related to the nurse's fatigue are reduced. In addition, nurses' working hours are defined as standard equivalents and recommended as standard working hours (IOM, 2011). The institution said it would attract more students to nursing courses by offering benefits that they can benefit from both during their internship and after graduation.
3. 3. Nurses Should Achieve Higher Levels of Education
As with other careers in the health sector, the institute proposes reforming the education system to facilitate the training of...
