Vitiligo is a chronic skin disease that causes patches of the skin to lose color. These patches grow more prominent with time. Vitiligo can affect any area of the skin. The following is the pathophysiology of this condition. Evidence has shown the onset of the disease comes about when melanocytes are altered (Frisoli et al., 2020). The altered melanocytes have been shown to have increased cellular response to stress. This alteration triggers the body’s autoimmune system to treat melanocytes as foreign objects/ pathogens, thereby launching an attack targeting them.
