The management of chronic illnesses such as diabetes is increasingly getting digital. Many patients are joining internet and mobile-based platforms for diabetes management directions, recommendations, and guidelines. With mobile phones becoming the prominent communication method globally and their advancing reliability, mobile phones are proving incredible platforms to anchor mobile applications that can act as clinically interactive points for chronic disease self-management platforms. Mobile apps are increasingly constituting clinical health systems geared at improving clinical efficiency and health outcomes, with their increasing deployment in multiple areas of disease management, including being applied in diabetes preventions program and management. Growing evidence demonstrates that diabetes self-care practices can be substantially improved when mobile-based interventions are incorporated to support therapeutic self-management as approaches to interventional adherence and deter disease progression and ensuing complications. The highly valued features in mobile applications include simplicity and capacity to offer specific guidelines, directions, instructions, and share data geared towards improved clinical management of the diseases. Already, various free and pain diabetes management mobile applications exist. Thus, a need to evaluate their effectiveness always arises if better chronic disease health outcomes are to be actualized. There is an increasing necessity to supervise and oversee mobile diabetes applications since the perceived health outcomes or benefits of controlling diabetes through such apps are uncertain.
Before expanding the use of mobile applications in managing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, an in-depth evaluation should be done to interrogate the efficiency, and the impact of such applications, where they can enable patients to choose the most appropriate mobile health technologies associated with better disease management and improved clinical outcomes, the features and content assessment permits ranking of mobile apps usability and completeness. Clinicians play a critical role in the deployment of mobile-based technologies m-health interventions. The clinicians should in a position to recommend and guide the patients in choosing and using the best applications that are aligned to patients' needs and treatment protocols. This study focused on iOS and Android content mobile-based diabetes applications to assess their functional capacity, content, and design features. The authors identified found variations in the mobile apps’ features and usability. The study findings showed that most mobile-based diabetic applications had a relatively small storage size and could be used offline and embedded with features that allowed exportation and tracking of diabetes-related management data. Thus, it means that patients enjoyed an electronic system that stored data for follow-ups, and this was considered the most valuable and favorite feature. However, it must be noted that limited apps provide automated data entry features that allow seamless collation and transfer of data. Some applications had integrated features comprising fitness and health apps that incorporate physical exercises, blood pressure, and weight into the overall data. Other features allow healthcare practitioners to offer input to patients based on application collated data at the remote point of interaction. The reminder feature in some mobile applications allowed users to check their blood sugar levels and take medication, for instance, when they take meals, leading to strengthening adherence and preventing hypoglycemia incidences. The core elements associated with improved clinical outcomes in the management of diabetes include healthy eating, physical activeness, glucose measuring, and monitoring, adherence to medication, cardiovascular risk reduction, and controlling stress. The mobile apps should capture these elements to improve self-management and improved health outcomes amongst diabetes patients. Thus, the study highlights mobile applications' potential and relevance in promoting self-care education, adopting healthy behavioral patterns, and helping patients cope with chronic disease without infringing on users’ safety and privacy.
