Three major principles are applied when designing bodybuilders’ training programs. The sliding filament theory explains the mechanism of muscle contraction whereby myosin filaments slide with actin filaments while maintaining a constant distance between them. Actin and myosin are synergistically involved proteins providing the energy needed for muscle contraction. The principle of motor unit recruitment is the fact that the involvement of the motor units in muscle contraction is done in a well-established order according to their sizes. Those requiring little energy are recruited first and have small-diameter motor neurons. The motor units with larger diameters and requiring a lot of energy motor neurons are involved next.
