Muscle hypertrophy refers to the increase in muscle cell size following physical exercises. The factors contributing to muscle hypertrophy include muscle damage, mechanical tension, and metabolic stress. Muscle damage is caused by resistance training that leads to tears in the local muscle tissue. Damage to the muscles, connective tissue, and other surrounding structures causes the delayed onset of muscle soreness within one to three days after exercising. Muscle damage leads to an inflammatory response and the release of growth factors that stimulate satellite cells. The cells become activated and multiply to promote the repair and growth of muscles, hence muscle hypertrophy.
