Overview
I was privileged to attend a Syphilis-PrEP Intervention in Community (SPICY) Project team meeting held on October 4, 2021. Participants were drawn from different geographical locations, including IDB, northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest, and southwest CARE pharmacy. The meeting had an average of 14 attendees, with all genders being present. More importantly, the function comprised different scholars versed with sexually transmitted diseases with HIV/AIDS. An array of themes was discussed in the event. The main subjects included clinical guidelines for PrEP, changes in PrEP prescription coverage and advancing access, and hepatitis treatment at PHOs. The meeting can be summarized as considering issues beyond syphilis because sexually transmitted illness is a severe health concern. In this vein, the targeted audience can be syphilis, HIV/AIDs, hepatitis C patients, and any nurse practitioner who wants to add more knowledge about STDs’ proper management. This activity was beneficial because it offered the latitude to synthesize critical information related to the STDs management approach. Besides, it broadened my networking space because I met new people well-endowed with matters related to health that are likely to positively impact my career in the future.
Problem
Syphilis is an enduring problem that the healthcare sector is battling currently. More precisely, the meeting focused on understanding the efficacy of using PrEP in preventing syphilis transmission. The literature surrounding PrEP use in preventing syphilis is scanty; however, provided information succeeds in informing literature of the needed improvements. According to Peel et al.’s (2021) retrospective study, 3-monthly PrEP visits alone are insufficient to detect portions of primary and secondary syphilis infections.
