The hypothalamus secretes a “-releasing hormone” to stimulate other target glands in the body, particularly the pituitary gland. Consequently, the pituitary gland secretes hormones to stimulate other target glands (Molina, 2006). This paper discusses the relationship of the hypothalamus to the different target glands.
The following are the hormones released by the hypothalamus to stimulate the anterior pituitary gland: corticotropin-releasing hormone, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, thyrotropin-releasing hormone, growth hormone-releasing hormone, somatostatin, and dopamine. The first four are stimulatory in nature, while the last two are inhibitory (Molina, 2006).
