Contemporary Nursing Practice Paper
Every sector has a management system that shapes its operations by defining the roles, responsibilities, and education that individuals operating under its guidelines should meet. In the healthcare sector, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is charged with this responsibility. Nursing, being a key stakeholder in healthcare, relies on the IOM for its operational guidelines. The entity helps determine how the nursing profession can be utilized to explore the vast opportunities and help build the health care system.
The Four Messages
The IOM, through its study committee’s report, outlines some key messages to guide nurses in their practice. The first message is that nurses should practice according to their training and education level to the full extent. Secondly, nurses ought to attain higher education levels and be trained in an improved education system that enhances academic progression. Thirdly, the nurses ought to be full partners comprising physicians and other health professionals in the country. Finally, there is a need for better data collection and information infrastructure in developing an effective workforce. These messages are designed to build a healthcare system that can meet the country’s safety, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care demands.
The Direct Influence of the IOM Report on Nursing Education and Nursing Leadership
The IOM report has a direct impact on both nurse education and nurse leadership. It specifies that nurses need more educational training to handle more responsibilities and challenges that keep healthcare recurring. A better-educated staff will be better placed in presenting new and innovative ideas to promote the development of the nursing sector. The program also advocated for the expansion of nurses as leaders who can adapt to change (Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine (2011). The healthcare sector is dynamic and demands a high level of flexibility. Therefore, nurses with appropriate leadership skills will be better placed at steering change in the profession for better healthcare service provision. Therefore, most of the nursing profession changes in both education and leadership can be attributed to the IOM efforts.
Benefits and Opportunities for BSN‐Prepared Nurses
The IOM’s recommendation for nurses to undergo BSN training was designed to open several opportunities. Some of these benefits include higher success rates when dealing with patients, low mortality rates, and low failure to rescue rates. Additionally, nurses who pursued the program had better qualifications that guaranteed them salary increments and better living standards. BSN-qualified nurses also had several opportunities for career growth and developme...
