Standards of Health Care

This is a threaded discussion where I must answer the question in detail with supporting documentation and give a response to a classmate. QUESTION*********Standards of Evaluation************ Which of the standards identified in this module does the US health care delivery system meet well and which standard does it not meet well? Explain your reasoning (provide support for your position). THE STUDENT THAT I AM RESPONDING TO IS GABRIEL GALLINAL: The standard identified in this module that the U.S. health care delivery system meet well are Quality of Care for women's health services. According to a population based data conducted by a Joint Canada/U.S. Survey of Health, noted that 17% - 21% of Canadian women and 8% -11% of American women did not receive their recommend cervical cancer screenings. With the recommend cervical screenings, cervical cancer can be detected early and has a 5 year relative survival rate of approximately 91%. If cancer has spread to distant organs, the 5 year survival drops to under 20% (California State Cancer Detection Service for Health care Professional, 2012). By adhering and following the recommend guidelines of cervical screening in America, we can effectively improve the morbidity and quality of life. The standard that the U.S. health care delivery system does not meet well is accessibility and cost of care. According to Lasser's 2006 report on Access to Care, “U.S. residents are one third less likely to have a regular medical doctor, one fourth more likely to have unmet health care needs, and more than twice as likely to forgo needed medicines.” The U.S. is severely lacking access to care for all of its citizens. Uninsured individuals often use the ER for non-emergent conditions, which further increases the time and costs for affordable emergency care for those that have insurance. For Fiscal Year 2012, the U.S. will spend approximately 17% of its Gross Domestic product on health care (Congressional Budget, 2012). The U.S. spends more on health care than any other industrialized nation but has a life expectancy, which is 2-3 years less than Canada. If we adopt Canada's concept of universal coverage it will go a long way to increase access to care and will reduce the costs associated with a multiple payers system.
