After completing the reading for this unit, I believe that the most significant obstacle facing marginalized populations in addiction treatment is cultural incompetence on the part of the counselor. Culturally and linguistically, minority populations tend to have the highest rates of addictive disorders and the lowest treatment-seeking rates compared to the rest of the population (Gainsbury, 2016). One of the biggest reasons for this mismatch is the lack of culturally and linguistically sensitive and appropriate treatment. Culture precedes and influences the clinical experiences of persons struggling with addiction, over and above, their willingness to continue seeking treatment (Gainsbury, 2016).
