Nurses need both leadership and management skills in an ever changing profession that is increasingly focusing on patient centered care and holistic care. Servant leadership is different from other leadership models, as servant leaders seek to meet the needs of follower, and is associated with motivating valuing and respecting them (Waterman, 2011). For nurse leaders to meet the needs of diverse communities, it is necessary to develop partnership, resolve conflicts and build teams. This essay focuses on responses to leadership role of empowering nurses, what entails being a servant leader and importance of collaboration in decisions making.
What do you think that you can do in your leadership role to empower others?
An empowering leader ought to guide a team to focus on the shared goals and visions, and as such they create dialog and facilitate collection and dissemination of information. Hence, infusing the shared vision to the nurses allows them to manage boundaries in their work as they clearly understand what is expected of them, while also identifying the risks and opportunities in the workplace that need transformation. This view sees nursing from the aspect of teamwork, where members work together to find solutions in an environment with open communication where the team addresses problems that fit in with the organization’s goals (Kelly & Tazbir, 2013). Thus, it is possible to focus on the important aspects of nursing practice as empowered nurses prioritize on nursing aspects encountered in their practice as they have power to make decisions.
