Abstract: This study aims to assess how Greek renal nurses feel about death and examine any relationships between their attitudes and demographic factors. Design: Descriptive quantitative study. The sample comprised of 49 nurses. Methodology: Voluntary and anonymous completion of the Death Attitude Profile-Revised and a demographic questionnaire. Results: 44 respondents were female and 5 were male with a mean age of 25.80 years. The mean nursing experience was 10.9 years. Nursing experience and age were the variables most likely to predict nurses' attitudes towards death. Nurses with specific education on palliative care had less difficulty talking about death and dying and did not have a fear of death. The Hospital-based teams (known as palliative care teams, supportive care teams or symptom assessment teams) had statistically significant different relationships with fear of death and neutral acceptance scores. Conclusions: It is recommended to include education on death and care of the dying in the nursing degree course in order for nurses who are giving terminal phase patient care to be better able deal with issues that death evolves.

Study background
Death is considered a natural incidence in the healthcare milieu, though the problem of looking after the dying has always been an important issue in the system of healthcare. Part of this problem comes from altering patterns of mortality and morbidity whereby more individuals live longer and die from the chronic conditions and degenerative processes that need extended terminal care (Zyga, Malliarou, Lavdaniti, Athanasopoulou & Sarafis, 2011). A specialized area that focuses on the requirements of patients who have kidney disease is called Nephrology nursing. This area of nursing is offered to these kinds of people together with their families throughout the continuum and lifespan of kidney disease care. The Nephrology nurses offer care throughout the health continuum and life span comprising of chronic and acute care to patients bearing kidney disease. These kinds of nurses among others who take long time care for dying patients develop a deep relationship with the patients and thus tend to get so affected after their death.
Problem statement
Many nurses get greatly affected by the death of the people they developed a relationship with, and this has often affected them psychologically, and work operations is altered greatly. Yet, there has been very limited information researched to address the matter that continues to leave the nursing department with great challenges (Zyga, Malliarou, Lavdaniti, Athanasopoulou, Sarafis, 2011). It is very significant to impart knowledge concerning care and death to the nurses and thus including such course in the nursing training should be mandatory. This would help the nurses dealing with the terminal disease patients to cope with the situation, being aware of what to expect and how to handle the situation.
Significance to nursing
The study is very important to the healthcare sector and specifically in the nursing department, as it would help realize the effects of a patient’s death on the caring nurse. This realization will help the department to look for a permanent solution to the problem. The study would also provide knowledge of the ratio of nurses likely to get affected by such a situation than others, enabling the involved department to know the magnitude of the situation.
Purpose of the study
The purpose of this research is to address the emotional needs of the nurses, as they have lacked attention in this area because they were previously viewed as emotional support providers (Smith et al, 2013). Moreover, the study aims at assessing the way nephrology nurses feel concerning death as well as examine some relationships between their demographic factors and attitudes.
Objectives: Research questions
Determine and weigh the emotional needs of the nurses
Determine the feelings of nephrology nurses regarding death of their patient.
Determine any relationships of the nurses’ attitudes as well as demographic factors.
Determine the ratio of those affect...
