One thing that has surprised me so far is the realization that mental health patients experience stigma from healthcare professionals. I have always thought these patients only experience stigma from peers, families, and the general public. I understand that mental health issues are characterized by complexities that can hinder the delivery of healthcare. As Fried and Robinaugh (2020) note, mental health is influenced by the interaction between psychological, biological, and social factors, contributing to the complexities of mental health conditions. It can be daunting to figure out the factors that contribute to the emergency of any given mental health disorder and the suitable treatment plan for patients.
I expected that those in healthcare have a glimpse of these complexities and a better understanding of mental health patients. However, I have learned that mental health patients experience stigmatization from healthcare professionals.
