Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety disorder is a common mental disorder characterized by fear, anxiety, or worry to the extent that a person cannot go about their day-to-day activities. According to Sharma (2020), a person with an anxiety disorder experiences cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms of anxiety, which interferes with their everyday life. In the film Enough, the main character, Slim, suffers from an anxiety disorder. She experiences worry, distress, paranoia, flight, and apprehension. This paper provides a nursing care plan for anxiety.
Movie Summary
Slim meets and marries Mitch, who seems to be the man of her dreams. They seem to have a perfect marriage until after the birth of their daughter Gracie when Mitch shows his true colors. He is possessive, controlling, and abusive, and his behavior causes Slim to develop an anxiety disorder. It also forces Slim to flee their matrimonial home for the sake of her and Gracie's safety. They go into hiding, but Mitch tracks them down whenever they find a new hiding place. However, Slim decides she has had enough. She trains in martial arts and engages her husband in a fight, which she wins.
Pathophysiology of Illness
Anxiety and any reaction associated with anxiety are linked to the amygdala. According to Chand and Marwaha (2022), the amygdala moderates fear and anxiety, and the amygdala's response to anxiety cues is higher in patients with anxiety disorder. Sharma (2020) adds that anxiety disorders are linked to abnormalities in the limbic system, which is responsible for emotional response regulation. Also, genetics, socio-cultural, and psychosocial factors contribute to anxiety disorder. For instance, in Enough, Slim’s anxiety results from psychosocial factors (stress stemming from the violence she experiences from her husband). An interaction between genetic factors and stressful or traumatic situations causes anxiety disorder (Chand & Marwaha, 2022).
Medical History
As mentioned, anxiety disorder is characterized by cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms. The cognitive symptoms include confusion, poor memory, and preoccupation (Ackley et al., 2022; Chand & Marwaha, 2022). Other symptoms include frightening thoughts, hypervigilance, and frightening memories. In the movie, Slim experiences hypervigilance and terrifying memories. Behavioral symptoms include agitation, distress, and flight (Ackley et al., 2022; Chand & Marwaha, 2022). Physiological symptoms include c...
