Reflection Blog. Inter-Professional Competencies. Medicine Essay
This week, reflect on the following:
It is clear from the work of IOM, the Interprofessional Education Collaborative, the Joint Commission (2008), and others that the ability to collaborate successfully across disciplines in health care is critically important. Thus, it behooves each of us to work to improve our skills in this regard.
This blog posting has two separate sections:
First, you have two different sets of interprofessional competencies:
1. the ones from the IPE Collaborative from the U.S : Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (Links to an external site.)
2. the ones from CIHC out of Canada (Links to an external site.).
Review these two lists of competencies and compare and contrast them. Which set of competencies resonates with you more? Why?
Then, use the National Interprofessional Competency Framework Self-Assessment (Links to an external site.) to evaluate your current level of this critically important skill. Complete the self-assessment and post your responses in your blog. For each sub-section of the self-evaluation (role clarification, team functioning, etc.), record how many "never", "rarely", etc reponses you checked. Reflect on your results. Consider your current level and how you can maintain your strengths and improve your weaker skills during your graduate program. How can your faculty and colleagues assist you in these endeavors?
Review the to ensure you have met all the criteria.

Inter-Professional Competencies
The ability to collaborate successfully and communicate easily is essential in the healthcare field. It helps ensure that healthcare professionals provide quality care services thus, promoting healthy lifestyles. Inter-professional competencies are vital because they help professionals understand their roles, foster team functioning, and improve performance and service provision (National League for Nursing). This article compares Inter-professional educational competencies in the healthcare profession in the United States and Canada. Besides, it also identifies the competencies that I resonate with excellently.
IPEC Collaborative from the U.S. and Canada portray some similarities and differences.
Similarities
* They are both state that healthcare success is linked to the functionality, skills, and composition of healthcare professionals. IPE collaboration in the U.S. is based on a 2011 report, whose objectives are to reaffirm the value and effect of core competencies, organize competencies to achieve a common goal and enhance competencies to promote patients satisfaction and lower healthcare costs (Health Sciences Center).
* Another similarity is that they both believe that inter-professional competence requires continuous development, which in turn, fosters better relationships between professionals. According to the National League for Nursing, collaboration ensures that there is an effective flow of information in different healthcare sectors. In this context, healthcare professionals can share critical information about patients thus, ensuring consistency in service delivery. Competencies in both countries are based on statements in previous documents.
Differences
Despite the similarities, inter-professional competencies in the U.S. and Canada portray some differences.
* One of the differences is that competencies in Canada healthcare professionals work in different departments to support patients with chronic conditions. However, these professionals are not trained in team-based skills, which can inhibit their abilities to provide quality services. On the other hand, professionals in the U.S. are trained in team-based skills, meaning that they are trained as teams and prepared to perform efficiently in a team-based healthcare setting.
The set of competence that resonates well with me is the IPE Collaborative as it focuses on training healthcare professionals in a team-based skill setting, which prepares them to work optimally in a team-based healthcare system.
