Other aspects that impact healthcare quality is institution administration, monetary and non-resources; the number of healthcare professionals; level of medical qualifications and experience; technology; staff well-being, and regulatory and legal issues. In order to deliver the best healthcare possible, healthcare institutions will implement numerous quality improvement programs based on evidence-based practices.
Emergency Department
Emergency department wait times have been a quality improvement opportunity in my organization. It is the job of a medical facility Emergency Unit (EU) to treat patients with a wide range of life-threatening or more minor life-threatening conditions, whether they are self-referred or brought in by doctors or other healthcare professionals. It also offers to accept and care for catastrophe casualties as part of its responsibilities concerning a specific geographic area. Additionally, Emergency unit high mortality rates can be significantly reduced if quick accessibility to emergency facilities is appropriately planned and managed. On the other side, unexpected deaths and health complications that may have been avoided can occur when the emergency does not meet the required standards. Hospitals that do not provide emergency services are required by evidence-based practice to show a prominent external sign or notice at the main entrance declaring this and offering the location of the nearest facility that does. The establishment of international criteria for access to emergency units serves as a guide for the goal of universal health care by 2030. When a hospital receives many unanticipated patient emergencies that require immediate attention at a specific time, the issue of prolonged emergency waiting times emerges. These occurrences take place at the exact moment. Patients who have been involved in accidents, natural disasters, disease outbreaks, or just a routine hospital visit may be considered emergency cases simultaneously. Hospitals should have adequate procedures to guarantee that emergencies are handled quickly and appropriately.
The Need and The Expected Outcome
The facility's Emergency Department requires a quality improvement project. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emergency room visits in hospitals have increased by 20% in the last decade. In the same period, the number of facilities with an ER has dropped by 15%. The overpopulation of Emergency Departments has been primarily due to these two issues. This issue necessitates creative solutions from facilities. Emergency rooms must have enough staff to care for new patients as quickly as possible and discharge them to another level of care. There must be enough medical personnel (doctors, surgeons, medical officers, and ambulances.) on standby to receive emergency cases. A second way to shorten wait times at the emergency department is to have advanced medical equipment with the newest technology. The initiatives will aid in establishing quick diagnoses, allowing for rapid healthcare service. The program's goal is to improve the quality of treatment, reduce death rates, and improve the hospital's management.
Research and Its Projected Outcomes
ED overcrowding has been shown to affect patient outcomes and the ability of personnel to follow guidelines. According to Morley and other researchers, they realized a discrepancy between the sources of the problem and the proposed solutions. Most of the reasons for ED overcrowding and delays in the patient release were attributed to patient flow efficiency inside the ED (Morley et al.,2018).
